VISHAKAPATNAM: Severe cyclonic storm Hudhud hit the port city of Vishakapatnam on Sunday bringing with it torrential rains in three coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and leaving five persons dead in the state and neighbouring Odisha besides snapping power and communication lines.
Normal life was thrown completely out of gear as winds with a speed of 170 to 180 kmph battered Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts.
As the storm progresses, it will bring heavy rainfall to very heavy rainfall in Chhatisgarh, Bihar, east Madhya Pradesh and east UP and Gangetic belt of West Bengal.
"We are in touch with the chief secretaries of these state governments and providing with bulletins. Warnings have also been issued to shift crops which have been harvested to minimise the impact of heavy rains in these areas," Rathore said.
Aircraft services will be able to operate from tomorrow morning as the weather is expected to improve.

In Bhubaneswar, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said the cyclone had its impact in different districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Puri, Kalahandi and Kendrapara.

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Phailin was the second-strongest tropical cyclone ever to make landfall in India, behind only the 1999 Odisha cyclone.

According to preliminary assessment, the death toll is eight, five in AP (three in Visakhapatnam and one each in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts) and three in Odisha. A little over four lakh people, about 250,000 in four districts of AP and 156,000 in nine districts of Odisha, were evacuated to relief camps.

Latest weather bulletin said Hudhud lay centred very close to south Chhattisgarh and adjoining southwest Odisha. It would move north-northwestwards and weaken gradually. Under the influence of the system, heavy rainfall would occur over Visakhapatnam, Vijayanagaram and Srikakulam districts of north Andhra Pradesh besides some districts of south Odisha during the next 24 hours.

Cyclone Hudhud caused extensive devastation as it made landfall at Visakhapatnam on Sunday afternoon. Three persons each were killed in cyclone-related incidents in the State and Odisha. Authorities evacuated more than five lakh people to relief camps in Andhra Pradesh.
While Visakhapatnam city and the wider district bore the brunt of the havoc, the cyclonic storm caused widespread damage in the north coastal districts of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram, besides affecting normal life in East Godavari.

- The toll in the aftermath of Cyclone Hudhud has increased to six.
- East Coast Railway (ECoR) announced tonight that three trains will start running each way on the Bhubaneswar-Palasa link from tomorrow. ECoR, however, cancelled, diverted and short terminated certain trains originating and passing through Odisha and Andhra Pradesh in view of the Cyclone Hudhud. "Bhubaneswar-Palasa link will resume in the morning of Monday. Three trains each way will operate for the benefit of daily passengers and office goers," an official of the ECoR said, PTI reported.
- Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik today assured his Naidu all help required by the neighbouring state, official sources said. Patnaik gave this assurance to Naidu when he called him over phone this evening.
- The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) again met this evening under the Chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth and reviewed the situation of the affected districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha after landfall of Hudhud this afternoon. PM Modi assures Andhra Pradesh CM of all support as cyclone Hudhud strikes
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday promised Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu all possible assistance as Cyclone Hudhud made landfall leaving five persons dead in the state and neighbouring Odisha.
The Prime Minister, who had yesterday held an emergency high-level meeting to review preparedness for the cyclone , today spoke to Naidu and discussed relief and rescue measures.
He had yesterday asked officials to ensure that rescue and relief operations proceed smoothly and people are informed about the cyclone on a real-time basis.
Modi had also asked Home Minister Rajnath Singh to be in touch with the Chief Ministers of the states likely to be affected by it.

The government of India has done extremely well," Naidu told the PM, who also praised the state's efforts to minimise losses.
Modi assured Naidu of all possible assistance to deal with the situation. The chief minister told Modi that he was leaving for Visakhapatnam in the evening and that he needs his cooperation.
